A busy weekend for New Plaza Cinema at Macaulay Honors College…although we advertised last weekend the “final screening”\u00a0for\u00a0Turn Every Page<\/em><\/strong>, I realized that Saturday April 29th will be Robert Gottlieb’s 92nd birthday.\u00a0Given the warm outpouring of affection for the film and its subjects from that screening,\u00a0we’ll be doing an irresistible “encore”\u00a0(the last one!) at 12:15 on Saturday.<\/p>\n Our two additions to this weekend’s schedule will feature very special appearances.\u00a0Swedish director Lasse Hallstr\u00f6m\u00a0became internationally renowned for his many ABBA videos, and Oscar-nominated for his breakthrough feature\u00a0My LIfe As a Dog<\/em><\/strong>, as well as\u00a0The Cider House Rules<\/em><\/strong>, along with other outstanding work in\u00a0What’s Eating Gilbert Grape<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Chocolat<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0His new film,\u00a0Hilma,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0chronicles the life of Hilma af Klint, the mid-20th century artist recognized in recent decades as a pioneer of abstract painting, supplanting the likes of Kandinsky, Malevich, and Mondrian.\u00a0New Plaza “regulars”\u00a0may remember the documentary on this subject we screened in 2020.<\/p>\n Hallstr\u00f6m\u2019s daughter Tora plays Hilma as a young woman. She and her father (now a Westchester resident!) will join us for a Q&A after Saturday\u2019s 5:10 showing.<\/p>\n We\u2019ll be marking this month\u2019s observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day with the exclusive NYC premiere of\u00a0Those Who Remained<\/em><\/strong>, a 2019 Hungarian — and Oscar shortlisted — drama of the parallel lives of two Holocaust survivors struggling to reconstruct their postwar lives.<\/p>\n Reviewing from the Telluride Film Festival, my friend Todd McCarthy wrote:\u00a0\u201cTerrific.
