As predicted,\u00a0<strong><em>The Teachers&#8217; Lounge\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>made the &#8220;final five&#8221; for Best International Feature and will continue with multiple screenings this weekend. In the coming weeks we plan to &#8220;encore&#8221;\u00a0<em>Past Lives\u00a0<\/em>(Best Picture\/Original Screenplay),\u00a0<em>\u00a0Nyad<\/em>\u00a0(Best Actress &amp; Supporting Actress), and\u00a0<em>Four Daughters,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Eternal Memory<\/em>\u00a0(both Best Documentary contenders).\u00a0 \u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>Joining our lineup this weekend will be an ambitious new animated drama from Hugh and DK Welchman, whose\u00a0<em>Loving Vincent<\/em>\u00a0was also an Oscar-nominee (and commercial hit) several\u00a0years ago.\u00a0<em><strong>The Peasants\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is based on an epic Polish novel by\u00a0Wladyslaw Stanislaw Reymont. One of Reymont&#8217;s other works was the\u00a0source for Andrezj Wajda&#8217;s 1975 classic film\u00a0<em>The Promised Land<\/em>. Its protagonist is a young woman whose determination to forge her own path within the confines of a late 19th century Polish village puts her on a collision course with the tradition-bound community.\u00a0<em>Indiewire<\/em>\u00a0critic Christian Blauvelt wrote:\u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><em>&#8220;Bringing this thousand-page novel to animated life in this way isn\u2019t just an adaptation, it\u2019s an illumination. It makes real the heightened reality that exists in your mind when reading a particularly captivating book.&#8221;<\/em><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>Also debuting at New Plaza Cinema this week will be the documentary<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><em><strong>Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest<\/strong><\/em>. Producer\/director Lisa Hurwitz (<em>The Automat<\/em>) will host this portrait of Pasang Lharmu Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to summit Mount Everest. There&#8217;ll be a Q&amp;A after both Saturday&#8217;s show and at<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>a reprise next Sunday.\u00a0 \u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>Ingmar Bergman&#8217;s classic\u00a0<strong><em>The Seventh Seal\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>will cap off our &#8220;Bergman Classics Month&#8221; on Sunday afternoon &#8212; tickets have\u00a0been selling fast for that one. And two recent French films,\u00a0<strong><em>Driving Madeleine<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with Line Renaud and Dany Boon, and Francois Ozon&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><em>The Crime Is Mine\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>starring Isabelle Huppert and Fabrice Luchini, will be back for single screenings.\u00a0\u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>Next weekend:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Steve McQueen&#8217;s epic documentary\u00a0<em>Occupied City,<\/em>\u00a0on the block-by-block fate of Amsterdam&#8217;s Jews in World War II, will screen at Saturday&#8217;s first show (WITH an intermission).<\/li>\n<li>Jean-Luc Godard&#8217;s 1966\u00a0<em>Masculine-Feminine<\/em>\u00a0will kick off February&#8217;s salute to the French Nouvelle Vague.<\/li>\n<li>A new American indie romantic comedy,\u00a0<em>Love&#8230;Reconsidered<\/em>, starring Sophie von Haselberg (Bette Midler&#8217;s daughter) and filmed partly on the Upper West Side, will have a special screening Sunday evening at 7 pm, with its lead actress and director Carol Ray Hartsell present for an after-discussion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><strong><em>Gary Palmucci.
