Our holdovers include Woody Allen&#8217;s <strong><em>Coup de Chance<\/em><\/strong>, Daniel Auteuil in <strong><em>Farewell Mr. Haffmann<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0 James Norton in <strong><em>Nowhere Special<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>Heaven Stood Still: The Incarnations of Willy DeVille<\/em><\/strong>, with director Larry Locke and special guests on hand for an after-discussion following Saturday&#8217;s 5 pm show &#8212; just a few tickets remain for that one.<\/p>\n<p>Plus four new additions to the program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>The Old Oak<\/em><\/strong> &#8212;\u00a0In Ken Loach&#8217;s latest (and perhaps final) film,\u00a0a mining village in socio-economic decline undergoes both turbulence and spasms of hope when a group of Syrian refugee families arrive, fleeing tragedies that make even the impoverished locals&#8217; pale by comparison.\u00a0In her Critic&#8217;s Pick <em>NY Times<\/em> review, Alissa Wilkinson wrote,\u00a0<em>&#8220;You&#8217;d know<\/em> <em><strong>The Old Oak <\/strong>was directed by Ken Loach (from a screenplay by his long-running collaborator Paul Laverty) even if his name wasn&#8217;t in the credits.\u00a0 His late work is unmistakable, driven by fierce moral clarity and outrage on behalf of the people\u00a0whom capitalism and Britain&#8217;s government,\u00a0 supposedly constructed for citizens&#8217; benefit, have left behind.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>My colleague (and Loach authority) Max Alvarez will join me for an after-screening discussion. Watch the <a href=\"https:\/\/newplazacinema.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4a0f9c3fe80ef70db6bfb6c6a&amp;id=560ed31b34&amp;e=8477a9c359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">trailer<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Stay With Us<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; In this semi-autobiographical comedy, French-Jewish comedian Gad Elmaleh (featured in Woody Allen&#8217;s <em>Midnight in Paris<\/em>) returns to France after a period of success in America, announcing to his loving but overbearing parents that &#8212; after a long period of ambivalence towards his own Jewishness &#8212;\u00a0he has officially decided to convert to Catholicism.\u00a0Comic family chaos ensues and, eventually, heart-warming reconciliation. Check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/newplazacinema.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4a0f9c3fe80ef70db6bfb6c6a&amp;id=4ab35f6040&amp;e=8477a9c359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"2\">trailer<\/a> online.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; As the mistress of both the Rolling Stones&#8217; Keith Richards and Brian Jones and &#8220;the model, actress and life force who embodied a certain image of &#8217;60s freedom&#8221; per <em>NY Times<\/em> reviewer Ben Kenigsberg, Anita is the latest rockumentary subject from specialists Magnolia PIctures (<em>Joan Baez, Brian Jones, The Wrecking Crew<\/em>,\u00a0et al).\u00a0A rich array of interviews and archival footage paints a fresco of dissolution, family tragedies and ultimately, redemption, narrated by Scarlett Johansson from Anita&#8217;s unpublished memoir. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/newplazacinema.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4a0f9c3fe80ef70db6bfb6c6a&amp;id=f472932af1&amp;e=8477a9c359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"3\">trailer<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Wicked LIttle Letters<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0a fabulous cast &#8212; Olivia Colman,\u00a0Jessie Buckley, Timothy Spall and Gemma Jones &#8212; gets caught up in a based-on-fact tale of a series of mysteriously obscene letters that start arriving in the English coastal town of LIttlehampton in 1920. Watch the <a href=\"https:\/\/newplazacinema.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4a0f9c3fe80ef70db6bfb6c6a&amp;id=0de374bb55&amp;e=8477a9c359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"4\">trailer.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several New Plaza Cinema patrons have inquired about Gus van Sant&#8217;s <em>Milk<\/em>, which we screened last weekend during CUNY&#8217;s LGBT festival.\u00a0 I found this film more moving &#8212; and relevant &#8212; than ever.
