Every shot in the trailer for the Romanian crime melodrama\u00a0<\/span>Dogs<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>\u2014 this week\u2019s addition to our Virtual Cinema lineup (see below) \u2014 suggests a young filmmaker with a gifted compositional \u2018eye.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n Veteran Variety critic Peter Debruge writes, <\/span>\u201cAn austere, yet technically accomplished cross between the Coen brothers\u2019 \u2018Blood Simple\u2019 and Cannes sensation \u2018Once Upon a Time in Anatolia\u2019 \u2014 one that Romanian cinema devotees might call \u2018Police, Noun\u2019 \u2014 Miric\u0103\u2019s debut feature belongs to a tradition of cynical, almost nihilistic crime thrillers in which a relatively petty motive can leave dozens lying in pools of their own blood. Though we experience the film through the eyes of a na\u00efve outsider, Roman (Drago\u0219 Bucur), who leaves the law and order of the city to tend to an inheritance issue, the first shot \u2014 in which flies buzz ominously as the camera tracks through nettles and weeds to a stagnant pool of water, the calm surface of which is disturbed first by bubbles and then the shocking appearance of a severed human foot \u2014 promises something far more sinister just beneath the surface of this rural grassland.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Romanian cinema first caught the attention of many international cineastes in 2007 with the Cannes Palme d’Or winner\u00a0<\/span>Four Months, Three Weeks and Two Days.<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0Other provocative titles such as<\/span>\u00a0The Death of Mr. Lazarescu<\/a><\/span><\/em>,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Police, Adjective<\/span><\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Graduation<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>and <\/span>12:08 East of Bucharest<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>played art houses around the world, and adventurous New Plaza Cinema viewers may recall our screenings of\u00a0<\/span>I Do Not Care if We Go Down in History as Barbarians<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0and the multi-Oscar-nominated\u00a0<\/span>Collective<\/span><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n The Romanian cinematic renaissance seems to me to follow a pattern: when a country undergoes a socio-political upheaval, as Romania surely did after the Cold War era finally \u2014 and in its case, violently \u2014 ended in the late 1980s, a medium like the movies is often a pungent outlet for recounting decades of injustice and repression.
