Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa (no relation to the great Akira) has over the past two decades built a body of work- gradually becoming better known in the US- \u00a0to rival that of his Japanese contemporary Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose Shoplifters <\/strong><\/em><\/a>is a New Plaza favorite.<\/p>\n Kurosawa latest, Wife of a Spy <\/em><\/strong><\/a>is this week\u2019s addition to our Virtual Cinema lineup. \u00a0Set in 1940 Japan, as the nation\u2019s military aspirations were on the verge of explosive expansion, this tale of a wife gradually drawn into her spouse\u2019s investigation of Japanese\u00a0atrocities in Manchuria and elsewhere manages to strike a unique balance between wartime suspense and a transformative love story.<\/p>\n In his recent Critic\u2019s Pick review, the NY Times\u2019 Glenn Kenny writes:<\/p>\n \u201cWife of a Spy<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is something like linear narrative perfection, with every scene perfectly calibrated.
