Scott wrote, <em>\u201c(Farhadi) makes films with the discipline and insight of a first-rate novelist.\u00a0A Hero is as anxious and swift as a thriller, with the density and observational acuity of a 19th-century three-decker.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6770 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/newplazacinema.org\/test_area\/staff_materials\/tickets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Playground-Image-293x300-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" \/>From Belgium,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newplazacinema.org\/test_area\/staff_materials\/tickets\/showtimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/newplazacinema.org\/test_area\/staff_materials\/tickets\/showtimes\/\"><em><strong>Playground<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is set in an elementary school where we witness a 7-year-old girl&#8217;s first steps into maturity, in her interactions with both peers and adults.\u00a0The <em>Times&#8217;<\/em> Manohla Dargis raved, <em>&#8220;This is the first feature from writer-director Laura Wandel, and it&#8217;s a knockout, as flawlessly constructed as it is harrowing&#8230;.If you don&#8217;t flash on your childhood with at least a few pangs while watching it, you are made of stronger stuff than I am.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From Kosovo,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newplazacinema.org\/test_area\/staff_materials\/tickets\/showtimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/newplazacinema.org\/test_area\/staff_materials\/tickets\/showtimes\/\"><em><strong>Hive<\/strong><\/em><\/a> revisits with striking impact that nation&#8217;s tragic late-90s civil war, via a woman&#8217;s desperate search for her missing husband years after the conflict.\u00a0Shortlisted for this year&#8217;s Best International Film Oscar category and Sundance winner of Audience, Directing and Grand Jury World Cinema prizes, this is simply one of the year&#8217;s best films, period.<\/p>\n<p>And from the US indie scene, director Sean Baker (2017\u2019s <em>Florida Project<\/em>) delivers <a href=\"https:\/\/newplazacinema.org\/test_area\/staff_materials\/tickets\/showtimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/newplazacinema.org\/test_area\/staff_materials\/tickets\/showtimes\/\"><strong><em>Red Rocket<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, wherein a combustible young man\u2019s return to his (and his ex-wife\u2019s) hardscrabble Texas town invites various kinds of mayhem. Lead actor Simon Rex just copped this year Indie Spirit Award for his go-for-broke performance, and my friend and Deadline.com critic, Todd McCarthy, has written how the movie <em>\u201cfeels hand-tooled, made from the ground up, enterprisingly cast and untampered with by executives and marketing types\u2026as creatively pure as a novel by a kid just out of college.
