Our special year-end holiday attraction will be an exclusive uptown run of the new British drama The Choral, starring Ralph Fiennes and Simon Russell Beale; with a screenplay by Alan Bennett and directed by Nicholas Hytner, who previously collaborated on The Madness of King George. |

When a vaunted choral society’s male members enlist (or are dratted) in World War I, its demanding choirmaster Dr. Guthrie (Fiennes) is forced to recruit a group of inexperienced teenagers and adult amateurs, with results alternately tragic and enthralling.
In this week’s NY Times Critic’s Pick review, Glenn Kenny called the film ” a moving account of music as a way of coping with war, as well as keeping it at bay….Fiennes here reminds us that he’s still capable of poignant subtlety. The film’s final shot will kick your heart into your throat.”
We’ll be screening The Choral on a full daily schedule from Dec 25-January 1, with a couple of shows – including on Christmas Day – already sold out. As always we recommend advance online purchase, arrival at the theatre at least 20 minutes before showtime, and having your tickets ready for inspection upon entry to our building at 35 West 67 St.
On the January 2-4 holiday weekend, we’ll be reprising (along with the continuing run of The Choral) as many of our most popular recent films as we can shoehorn into the schedule, including Nuremberg, Blue Moon, Sentimental Value, Shttl (with Q&A by lead actor Moshe Lobel) and Auction.
With awards season kicking into high gear in January, we’ll be aiming to add a few extra days of screenings, starting with Thursday, January 8 –extra incentive to join our mailing list, if you haven’t already.
And, in another heads-up to those patrons who’ve requested it: on Saturday January 10 we’ll be doing a special screening of the epic (5 1/2 hours, with intermission) documentary My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow, which has swept virtually every ‘best doc’ award from the major critics’ groups, as well scoring a slot on this month’s Oscar shortlist. Check out its many rave reviews, and news stories….on that same weekend we’ll be joining the NYC premiere of another short lister, from Jordan for Best International Film, All That’s Left of You, from Palestinian-American director Cherien Dabis and executive producers Mark Ruffalo and Javier Bardem, a chronicle of multi-generational struggle on the West Bank.
