Films this week 4/12 to 4/14/2024

This has turned out to be one of the most “stacked” New Plaza Cinema weekends that I can remember. Let’s get right to it!

  • Woody Allen’s Coup de Chance joins our lineup after its strong downtown opening last weekend. His 50th feature film finds Allen working for the first time in a foreign language — French — with a sterling cast, many of whom fans of le cinema Francais will recognize: Lou de Laage, Melvil Poupaud, and Valerie Lemercier. Cinematography is by the legendary Vittorio Storaro. This tale of the tenuous bonds of love, infidelity, and twists of fate is familiar ground for the filmmaker, even if in a new langage and milieu. I strongly suggest checking out Manohla Dargis’ review in last Friday’s NY Times — it is “spoiler free” and overall very perceptive about the arc of both this particular film, and Allen’s overall career. Please check our schedule for extra Coup de Chance screenings this weekend.
  • Kiss Me Kosher — We’re hosting the NY Theatrical Premiere of this Israeli tale of romantic misadventure, wherein two generations of Israeli women fall for a German woman and a Palestinian man, and social chaos ensues. The international cast includes Juliane Kohler, from the Oscar-winning Nowhere in Africa, and John Carroll Lynch, whose indelible character work was featured in Zodiac, Gran Torino, and The Americans. He will join us for Q&As on both Saturday and Sunday night.
  • Blazing Saddles — Our April classic film “theme” is the amazing movie year of 1974, and what better way to kick it off than with Mel Brooks’ outrageously comic gutbuster? For those patrons who’ve asked, next weekend we will be encoring Remembering Gene Wilder, the affectionate portrait of Blazing’s “gunslinger.”
  • The Taste of Things — Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel make both culinary and romantic magic in this Cannes-winning chronicle of a 19th century rural French restaurant, its acolytes, its devotees, and its alchemists.

And holding over after recent sold out shows — Akira Kurosawa’s Ran, Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days, and Daniel Auteuil in Farewell Mr. Haffmann.

Buy your tickets online and early, and follow our hard-working team on social media: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! Screenings are often announced in advance on social media, as well.
