New Plaza Cinema will be back this weekend (Saturday and Sunday only) at our regular venue at Macaulay Honors College.

We’ll be screening four films, headlined by the warmly inspiring French comedy-drama The Marching Band. After nearly 150 patrons packed our premiere screening last weekend at the Museum of Arts and Design, we’ll be doing three more shows this weekend. As always, we recommend advance online ticket purchases.

The darkly comic LIthuanian Oscar candidate How to Divorce During the War will also be back with two more screenings, Its director Andrius Blazevicius, who beguiled our audience with his Q&A last Saturday, can be heard on NPR’s Weekend Edition with Scott Simon.

Another of this month’s screening highlights at MAD, Wild Inside, the chronicle of NYC’s beloved Flaco, the Eurasian owl, will screen Sunday afternoon with an intro from director Penny Lane, along with after-show discussion from film participants Jacqueline Emery and David Lei.

This weekend’s new addition to our schedule is a hard-hitting documentary, American Doctor, that’s been playing to frequently full houses in its downtown premiere. In his NY Times Critic’s PIck review, Ben Keningsberg wrote:

“…it is centered on a planned trip to Gaza by three American physicians during the tenuous cease-fire agreement that existed in early 2025. All three were also there the year before. This documentary does what it can to show you what the doctors have seen…”

The hospital footage can often be tough to watch, but whatever one’s political persuasion, the courage of these three young Americans is remarkable.

Labor Day weekend will feature a full four-day schedule of screenings, including a pair of special reprise shows of the passionate drama SHTTL, with

its director Ady Walter making his first appearances at New Plaza Cinema, along with his tireless leading man, Moshe Lobel.
