Films 3/31 – 4/03/22

Movie lovers far and wide are still processing Sunday night’s Oscar spectacle. History was made by several of the winners, as well as more than a jot of infamy.

The distributor of the evening’s biggest triumph has apparently declined to make the film available for theatre screenings this weekend, so New Plaza Cinema has assembled the most reflective Oscar program that we could.

My thoughts, in random order:

  • Dune – Six Oscar wins including cinematography, score and sound: the latter being showcased in all its stentorian glory on the West End Theatre’s sound system.
  • The Tragedy of Macbeth & King Richard – Denzel Washington reportedly told Will Smith in between The Slap and The Speech, “In your highest moments, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you.” He should know, having played the Thane so masterfully.
  • All About My Mother – Pedro Almodovar and Penelope Cruz have been packing our theatre this month with their Parallel Mothers. Here’s a rare chance to revisit their 1999, Barcelona-set Oscar winner.
  • Summer of Soul – Our other “sellout” movie, back for a victory lap after its Best Documentary win. Even the onstage tumult couldn’t diminish Questlove’s tears of joy.
  • The Power of the Dog – Jane Campion’s eloquent Best Director acceptance Sunday night mandates at least one more big screen look.
  • Licorice Pizza – Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson came up empty handed, but his one-of-a-kind 1973 love story surely won’t be forgotten…
