Films 3/17 – 3/20/22

On this weekend before the Oscars we’re showcasing seven nominated films — six of which are making the their premiere West End Theatre appearance — plus a reprise of the powerful drama Hive (an Oscar “shortlister” from Kosovo) featuring a guest speaker.
Some of the highlights include:
- Pedro Almodovar’s Parallel Mothers, showcasing Best Actress nominee Penelope Cruz. I defy anyone to predict with certainty who’s going to win in this “Oscar pool tie-breaker” category. Our first screening was a surprisingly robust turnout. We suggest getting tickets for Saturday night in advance.
- King Richard (Best Actor frontrunner Will Smith) and Dune from Warner Bros demonstrate that smart, big-budget Hollywood filmmaking is still alive, and both should look great on our 22-foot-wide screen.
- Three of the five “best documentary feature” finalists: Attica, Ascension, and Writing With Fire (a much-requested title), making it a clean sweep for us in securing every nominee.
- Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog courtesy of Netflix, our first New Plaza Cinema screening from the company since Roma. One of their executives visited last week and was so impressed with the theatre’s picture and sound that he gave us an immediate “green light.” We look forward to showing more of their films.
In response to our many patrons who have asked, we do expect next weekend to re-screen at least once each of these worthy nominees…
