As anticipated, New Plaza Cinema’s watershed hit film Living received two Oscar nominations this morning: Best Actor for Bill Nighy and Best Adapted Screenplay by novelist Kazuo Ishiguro.
This has been an amazing experience for all of us here — instead of being merely a small cog in a wide release, we’ve been one of just three theatres nationally whose enthusiastic audiences have packed the house for the past five weekends, keeping Living and Bill Nighy squarely in the sightlines of Academy voters and film industry “tastemakers.” We have loved saluting the many hundreds of new cineastes who have discovered us at Macaulay Honors College.
So here we are… Living will continue its run in the coming weeks, and we also hope to append various other Oscar nominees to our schedule, as well as adding extra shows of Turn Every Page (every screening has sold out so far) and Only In Theaters, whose director Raphael Sbarge will join us for another Q&A after Friday night’s 7:45 screening.
Also this weekend, please join us for the US theatrical premiere of
- Honoring Eric Bentley — a documentary tribute in both testimony and song, to one of the heroes of 20th century American theatre, the late playwright, singer, translator and often pungently perceptive critic Eric Bentley, with appearances and musical performances by a stellar cast of his admirers, including Tony Kushner, Philip Lopate, Karyn Levitt, and Austin Pendleton. Austin, who joined us after Only In Theaters last Saturday night, will host our 12:30 screening on January 28th. Check out the exuberant trailer on YouTube.
