Films this week 11/11 – 11/13/2022

Thanks to our loyal patrons (and many new ones) who delivered New Plaza Cinema’s first SOLD OUT show last weekend in our new venue at Macaulay Honors College. Michael Imperioli joined filmmaker Julia Mintz following a screening of her riveting documentary Four Winters to discuss its genesis and ever-relevant issues. We’ve invited Michael to return in the coming weeks to screen a film of his choosing — stay tuned.

This weekend we’ll be offering another rich assortment of films with some very special guests, including the NY premiere of a new documentary Black Notebooks: Ronit from actor/director Shlomi Elkabetz. If you caught the remarkable Israeli mini-series Our Boys (still streaming on HBO Max) you may remember the implacable “internal terrorism” agent who breaks open a murder case — based on actual events — and exposes layers of convulsive personal and national tragedy.

That was Shlomi Elkabetz. He co-directed with his sister Ronit in the award-winning drama Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem, which in 2015 ran for ten weeks at the Lincoln Plaza. Ronit Elkabetz also starred in other Israeli cinema classics including The Band’s Visit and Late Marriage. Tragically, she died from lung cancer in 2016 and Black Notebooks: Ronit is her brother’s unconventional but no less heartrending portrait of her life and career, their family, and their close personal and artistic ties.

Some extraordinary guests will be joining Shlomi Elkabetz for Q&As after our screenings:

  • on Friday night, actor John Turturro
  • on Saturday night, novelist Nicole Krauss
  • on Sunday afternoon, actress Mili Avital

We hope you can join us. We’ll also be offering two screenings of Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem, showcasing Ronit Elkabetz’ incandescent performance as co-directed by her brother.

In addition, we’ll be offering Q&As after our showings of Peaceful (De Son Vivant) with the beloved Dr. Gabriel Sara and Four Winters (special guests to be announced — please consult our website). The Good House and All Quiet on the Western Front will also have reprise screenings.

And next weekend — another cornucopia of films and personal appearances…keep watching the screen!
