We’ve had a great run of Christmas week screenings here at New Plaza Cinema, with many patrons visiting us for the first time. Films like Conclave, Songs for a Coup d’etat and Flow have been consistently playing to capacity houses; there’ll be more shows of each in the coming week, but as always we strongly recommend advance online ticket purchase, as well as arriving at the theatre at least 20 minutes early.

There are some other very worthy films playing this coming week to which we’d like to call your attention:

Classics, including the full-length version of Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece Fanny and Alexander: parts 1 & 2 will screen on Saturday Dec 28 at parts 3 & 4 on Sunday Dec 29, at 1215 pm on both days. A very rare opportunity to see this in a cinema.

Also: James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo in Rebel Without a Cause on Sunday Dec 29, hosted by Make Me Famous director Brian Vincent and film historian Foster Hirsch; and Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy in their 1957 office-comedy romp Desk Set, which delighted our audience on Christmas afternoon.

Filmmaker and New Plaza Cinema board member Susanne Rostock will both introduce and do a Q&A on Dec 30 with her inspiring documentary , Following Harry, chronicling the final years and ongoing legacy of the great Harry Belafonte.

A special ‘documentary double feature’ will screen on Dec 31: RBG filmmaker Betsy West’s Oscar short-listed Once Upon a Time in Ukraine and Obsessed With Light, a galvanizing portrait of early 20th century dance pioneer Loie Fuller, both featuring special guests.

Finally, on Thursday afternoon Jan 2, we’ll commence an extended engagement of an exhilarating new French rendition of The Count of Monte Cristo, adapted from Alexandre Dumas’ immortal novel. In her NY Times Critic’s Pick review, Jeanette Catsoulis wrote,

“Adapting The Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas’s voluminous adventure yarn, is not for the fainthearted. But the French filmmakers Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière prove lacking in neither heart nor style: Refusing to pander to restless derrières, they’ve given this big, bounding, beautifully cinematic swashbuckler almost three hours to breathe. Yet their pacing is so frisky — and the film’s editing so elegant — your derrière is unlikely to complain….stirringly acted and gorgeously filmed, this swashbuckler leaves the many previous versions in the dust.”

Whether it’s your first visit, or your umpteenth, we look forward to seeing you soon….
