Films this week 3/17 – 3/19/2023

So the six-month “awards season” has finally come to an end. Whatever one may think of Sunday’s night’s big winners,  the no muss-no fuss Oscar ceremony had its share of memorable acceptance speeches, along with glimpses of our beloved Bill Nighy (though we couldn’t discern if that was Anna Wintour to his left or right) and as expected, the rousing performance and Best Original Song win for ‘Naatu Naatu’ from RRR.

We’ll be reprising that kinetic Indian epic (in its original Telegu-language version with English subtitles) on Sunday afternoon, along with continuing audience favorites The Quiet Girl, Turn Every Page, and Living (now a New Plaza Cinema exclusive).

And please note these two very special weekend screenings:

  • On Friday night we will host the NYC theatrical premiere of Ithaka, chronicling the ongoing UK incarceration of Julian Assange and the tireless efforts of his father John Shipton to keep his son’s case — and the vital issues surrounding it — in the limelight. Mr Shipton will join us for a Q&A after the 7:45 pm screening.
  • On Sunday afternoon our inaugural Weekend Classics series “Outrageous Pre-Coders” will wrap with Merrily We Go to Hell, a licentious 1932 comedy-drama featuring Sylvia Sidney, Frederic March and an early appearance by Cary Grant.
  • Finally, please mark your calendar on next Sunday, March 26 for a special, one-time-only screening of the legendary French WW2 documentary The Sorrow and the Pity, direct from its recent sell-out downtown engagement, featuring a new, vastly improved English-subtitle translation.
