Eric Bentley is one of the most respected theater critics, playwrights, editors and translators of our time. For his 100th birthday, a galaxy of stars honored him at Broadway’s legendary Town Hall. This unique film captures their tributes highlighting Bentley’s influential contributions, which changed how theater is understood and performed. The historic evening featured the participation of Tony Kushner, Austin Pendleton, Harold Bloom, James Shapiro, Edward Mendelson, Phillip Lopate, Louise Kerz Hirschfeld, Michael Paller, and Roger Copeland, and was emceed by Michael Riedel.

Michael Paller, Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University School of the Arts, was resident dramaturg and Director of Humanities at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco from 2005-2018. He was the dramaturg for over 80 productions and workshops and also served as one of the Heads of Faculty in its esteemed MFA Program in Acting.

In this adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel “The Island of Doctor Moreau,” Edward Parker (Richard Arlen) is shipwrecked on a remote island presided over by the mysterious Dr. Moreau (Charles Laughton). Edward discovers his host is conducting genetic experiments, and presiding over a race of half-human, half-animal hybrids, including the alluring Panther Woman and the sage Sayer of the Law (Bela Lugosi). The island has become its own society, with Moreau as its god.
